Mummies II » EGYPT-MUMMY-RAMSES

The 3,000-year-old Egyptian mummy believed to be that of King Ramses I is seen following his return to Egypt 140 years on from North America 26 October 2003, at Egypt’s National Museum in Cairo. Ramses’ mummy was smuggled out of Egypt after Italian explorer Giovanni Battista Beloni discovered his tomb in October 1817 in the Valley of Kings. He has been in North America since 1861, first in Canada, then in Niagara Falls in New York state. The Michael C. Carlos museum in Atlanta acquired him three years ago. Ramses I founded the 19th dynasty, ruled only for two years and was the second military commander in ancient Egypt. He is less well-known than his illustrious grandson, Ramses II.
